Travel
Getting to Chania, where to stay, what to do with the days around the wedding.
Flying in
Chania is well connected in summer with direct flights to CHQ from most of Europe. Heraklion (HER) can offer cheaper fares and more route options — and if you have a car, the drive via Knossos, the Aquarium & Rethymno is a great bonus. From Thessaloniki (SKG) there are several operators worth comparing beyond Aegean and Sky.
- CHQ · Chania Airport20 min from Old Town · direct seasonal flights from most of Europe
- HER · Heraklion Airport2.5 h drive from Chania · often cheaper fares & more options — visit Knossos, the Aquarium & Rethymno on the way
- SKG · ThessalonikiAegean and Sky can be pricey — worth checking low-cost carriers for a better deal
By boat
Two ferry routes serve western Crete. The ANEK night ferry from Piraeus is the most popular choice for families and car travellers. Those coming from the Peloponnese have a quieter alternative via Gytheio.
- ANEK · Piraeus → ChaniaNightly at 22:00, arrives next morning. Some daytime sailings on selected dates. Best value with a car or for families.
- Seajets · Gytheio → KasteliFor travellers from the Peloponnese. Departs Tue 16:00, arrives Kasteli 23:35 (~6.5 h). Affordable and uncrowded — no cabin needed. Kasteli to Chania is 25 min. No car? Let us know and we'll pick you up. Return trip is one week later.
By car
Renting a car gives you the most flexibility. The Chania–Heraklion motorway (E75) is fast and well-maintained. Old Town parking is limited — see the parking guide on the home page.
Where to stay
Honest advice from people who know the town. The short version: avoid the Old Town, choose based on whether you have a car.
- Old Town & Old Port — avoidExpensive, overcrowded and loud at night. Parking is nearly impossible. Beautiful to visit, but not where you want to sleep.
- Nea Chora & Koum Kapi — no car neededWalking distance to the centre, the beach and the Old Town. Good value. Best pick if you're not renting a car.
- Near Park & Ride or outside the city — with a carDistances are short and prices noticeably better. Look near the two free Park & Ride lots or in villages around Chania — you're 5–15 min from everything.
While you're here
Arrive a few days early — Crete rewards exploration. These are our personal picks.
- Rethymno · Argyroupoli · Limni Kourna · VrisesA full-day inland loop: Roman ruins and freshwater springs at Argyroupoli, the only natural freshwater lake in Crete at Limni Kourna (swim & kayak), and a shaded taverna lunch in Vrises.Map
- Samaria Gorge — for the sporty16 km through the White Mountains. Take the bus from Chania — there is no way back: you exit from a completely different point and return by ferry and bus. Start at Xyloskalo, finish at Agia Roumeli, ferry to Hora Sfakion. Allow a full day and wear good shoes.Map
- Chrysoskalitissa · Elafonisi · KedrodasosA southwest day trip: the clifftop monastery, then Elafonisi's pink-sand shallow lagoon, and the wild cedar forest of Kedrodasos for solitude. ~1.5 h from Chania.Map
- Palaiochora · Agios BarA laid-back south-coast town with crystal-clear water. Swim on the beach, then end the evening at Agios Bar — probably the most inventive and extreme cocktails on the island.Map
- Balos & Gramvousa — by boatA must. Turquoise lagoon, Venetian fortress, pelicans. Take the boat from Kasteli port (free parking there). Driving is not worth it — the road is brutal and parking impossible. Pre-book your spot: boats fill up fast.Map
